MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Kat Butler had 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists
Saturday to lead Christian Brothers to a 73-61 women's basketball victory against
Xavier University of Louisiana.
The Lady Bucs (2-0) snapped the four-game winning streak of the Gold
Nuggets (4-2), who were looking for their second road win in as many days.
Jarryn Cleaves, playing in her hometown, and
Erica Turnbull scored
16 points apiece for Xavier. Cleaves grabbed nine rebounds, one less than
her career best. Freshman
Danielle Jones scored 10 points to match her season high.
The Lady Bucs took the lead for good with eight consecutive points after Xavier tied
the score at 42. Erin Nigh's basket with 9:19 remaining gave CBU a 50-42 lead.
Jones scored eight points in the first half, including a basket which gave the
Gold Nuggets a 27-21 lead with 2:47 remaining. But CBU scored the final nine points
of the half and led 30-27 at the break. Xavier never led in the second half.
CBU shot 50 percent from the floor and became the first Xavier opponent this season
to score 70 points. The Nuggets entered the game allowing 49 points per contest.
Xavier's next game will start at 7 p.m. Thursday at The Barn against Robert Morris
of Chicago in the Xavier Classic. Dillard, Grambling, Langston and Texas College also
will compete in the two-day event.
