MOBILE, Ala. — Sharidan Hollis scored 21 points Saturday, including the winning
3-pointer with 35 seconds remaining, to rally Spring Hill to a 71-68 Gulf Coast
Athletic Conference women's basketball victory over Xavier University of Louisiana.
Erica Turnbull had 21 points and seven rebounds, and
Jarryn Cleaves scored
14 for Xavier (11-3 overall, 1-1 GCAC), whose seven-game winning streak ended.
The Nuggets are No. 21 in the NAIA Division I coaches poll.
Spring Hill (2-9, 1-0) trailed 38-28 at halftime and by 13 points early in the second half.
Free throws helped the Lady Badgers rally; they were 9-of-10 in the second half, and the
Nuggets were 3-of-9. For the game Spring Hill was 14-of-17 from the line, and Xavier was 8-of-15.
After Hollis' 3-pointer broke a tie at 68, Xavier's
Tiffany Norris missed two
free throws with 19 seconds remaining, and teammate
Shayla Boyd missed a
3-pointer from 27 feet as the buzzer sounded.
Rashonda Belton scored 18 points and Keisha Forbes 15 for Spring Hill,
which snapped a four-game losing streak and beat Xavier for the first time
in the past 10 meetings.
Xavier outshot Spring Hill 47 to 46 percent from the floor, but the Lady
Badgers had a 38-27 rebound advantage. Xavier committed 15 turnovers and gained 25.
Xavier's next game will start at 5:30 p.m. Thursday against city and GCAC opponent
SUNO at The Barn.
