Brittany Powell had 18 points
and a season-high-tying 12 rebounds, and
LaTashia Wise scored a career-high
16 points Saturday to lead NAIA No. 18 Xavier University of Louisiana to a
74-57 women's basketball victory over Paul Quinn.
Xavier (7-1), winning for the fourth straight time,
extended its victory streak at The Barn to 23 games. The Gold Nuggets have won
71 of the past 73 games in their campus facility.
Powell, who is averaging 19 points and 11 rebounds
in the past three games, also had a season-high four blocked shots. Wise,
scoreless the previous two games, led the Nuggets with nine first-half points.
Crystal DeBose made six 3-pointers and scored 21
points for Paul Quinn (2-8), and Jasmine Stevenson scored 14.
Xavier twice trailed by a point in the first five
minutes, then five Nuggets scored in a 13-0 that put them ahead to stay, 17-5,
with 8:58 remaining in the half. Xavier led 39-22 at the break and took its biggest
lead, 73-45, on
Jazmoné Kelly's basket with 2:39 remaining.
Stevenson scored six points during a 12-1 Paul Quinn
run in the final 2:18.
Xavier outshot the Lady Tigers 38 to 30 percent from the
floor and outrebounded them 58-39. The Nuggets had three double-figure rebounders,
including
Johnna Williams and Kelly with a season-high 10 apiece.
The Nuggets, who lead the series 13-0, will play the Lady
Tigers again Dec. 30 in Paul Quinn's HBCU Classic at Dallas. Xavier's next game
will start at 4 p.m. on Dec. 19 against Judson (Ill.) in the San Juan Classic at
San Juan, Puerto Rico. Paul Quinn's next game will start at 6 p.m. on Dec. 15
at home against LSU-Shreveport.
