Ryan DeRousselle and
Michael Harvey
each scored 11 points, and Xavier University of Louisiana scored on
each of its final four overtime possessions Saturday to grab a 59-56 Gulf
Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball victory over NAIA No. 23 Belhaven.
The Gold Rush (9-5 overall, 1-1 GCAC) snapped
a two-game losing streak and gave the Blazers (9-4, 1-1) their first home
loss in five games this season. Xavier has beaten Belhaven in 20 of the
past 23 meetings.
Kelechi Okoroha added 10 points and nine rebounds
for Xavier, which led 27-19 at halftime. Belhaven's Krayleon Winston made
two free throws with seven seconds remaining to tie the score at 49 and
force overtime.
Consecutive 3-pointers by Harvey and
Shaun Dumas
in overtime erased a three-point deficit and put Xavier ahead to stay,
55-52. DeRouselle preserved the victory by making 4-of-4 free throws in
the final 17 seconds.
Xavier is 5-0 in overtime since the start of the
2006-07 season and 2-0 this season.
Korey Whiting led Belhaven with 20 points and
15 rebounds. Winston scored 18, and Iman Walcott had 13.
Both teams will play GCAC opponents at 7:30 p.m.
Thursday. Xavier will play Tougaloo at The Barn — the first Gold Rush home game
in 40 days — and Belhaven will travel to Mobile.
