NEW ORLEANS —
Shayla Boyd and
SiMon Franklin
scored 14 points apiece Thursday, and Xavier University of Louisiana set
a school record for 3-point accuracy in a 76-55 Gulf Coast Athletic
Conference women's basketball victory over Spring Hill.
The victory was a season-high sixth in a row for
the Gold Nuggets (22-7 overall, 13-4 GCAC), who made a season-best nine
3-pointers in 12 attempts for a school-record 75 percent. The previous
mark was 57.1 percent against Spring Hill on Feb. 19, 2004.
Boyd was 4-of-5 from 3-point range, and
Jasmine Grant,
who scored 10 points, was 3-of-4.
Sharidan Hollis scored 19 points, Keisha Forbes
11 and Erica Wright 10 for Spring Hill (7-20, 4-13), which lost its second
in a row after winning three straight. The Lady Badgers are 1-12 on
opponents' courts this season.
A 26-4 first half run enabled Xavier to turn an
18-11 deficit into a 40-27 lead by halftiome.
Johnna Williams blocked one shot to tie the Xavier
season record of 58, set by Gwendolyn Brule in 1981-82.
Xavier shot 46 percent from the floor and gained
33 turnovers, 24 by steals. The Nuggets, who will be the No. 3 seed in the
GCAC Tournament, will close the regular season with a 5 p.m. game Saturday against
longtime rival Dillard in the Bleu Devil Classic at the University of
New Orleans' Lakefront Arena.
