LORMAN, Miss. — One streak ended and another
continued Wednesday when the Xavier University of Louisiana women's volleyball
team defeated Alcorn State 29-27, 25-23, 25-16.
The Gold Nuggets (6-22), who ended a 16-match losing
streak last week, snapped an 18-match road losing streak by beating the Lady Braves
(0-13). It was Xavier's first win away from The Barn since sweeping Judson (Ala.) on Sept. 4.
Alcorn State, meanwhile, has lost 42 straight since a
three-set home sweep of Alabama State on Oct. 31, 2008.
"Everyone played solid," Xavier Coach Al'lisa Hale said.
"I was pleased. It was the first time in a while we walked away totally satisfied."
Xavier pulled out of a tie at 24 in the opening set
and won it on an Alcorn attack error.
Danielle Jones clinched the second with a
kill, and the Nuggets rallied from a 4-1 third-set deficit to complete the sweep.
"We went out there with a new lineup," Hale said. "We
had
Iva Bobkova opposite
Kia Kaufman, who was setting in a 5-1 offense. We also
started Erin Vicnent,
Sierra Lyons,
Joyy Joseph and
Danielle Jones, with Celeste
Poe going in as the libero for Danielle. Everybody played well. I think this lineup
is going to be a great turnaround for the girls."
Xavier, an NAIA member, is 2-0 this season against
Alcorn, an NCAA Division I opponent. Half the Gold Nuggets' victories this season
are against NCAA D-I.
The Gold Nuggets, who have four regular-season matches
remaining, will travel to Gulf Coast Athletic Conference opponent Tougaloo for a
3 p.m. contest Friday, then return home for a 6 p.m. Saturday match against GCAC
and city rival Dillard at The Barn. Alcorn State will play host to Alabama State
at 7 p.m. Friday.
