HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Xavier University of Louisiana produced a season-best
four double-figure scorers but lost 96-67 Saturday to William Carey in men's basketball.
Hakeem Simon had 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds in his first double-double
for the Gold Rush (1-3), ranked 25th in NAIA Division I.
Seth Jackson scored 14 points
and
Mike Williams 12 for XULA, and
Leland Alexander had 10 points and nine rebounds.
The loss was XULA's third in a row.
Leo Garrett made four 3-pointers and scored 18 points for the Crusaders (2-1), ranked 10th
in NAIA Division I, and Troy Salvant and Ashton Woodson scored 10 points apiece. Salvant played for XULA as a freshman in 2014-15.
William Carey took the lead for good in the fifth minute, led 46-28 at halftime and twice led by
32 in the final two minutes. The Crusaders held a double-digit lead for the final 27 minutes.
William Carey outshot XULA 51.5 to 37.5 percent from the floor and was plus-14 in turnovers after
committing 17 and gaining 31. The Gold Rush made 27-of-42 free throws to the Crusaders' 17-of-32
and held a 44-40 rebound advantage.
The longtime rivals will meet again Feb. 1 at XULA.
Next for the Gold Rush will be a 7:30 p.m. game Tuesday at the Convocation Center
against city rival Loyola.
