LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Hailee Farstveet made 1-of-2 free throws with one
second remaining Sunday to give Rocky Mountain a 62-61 women's basketball victory
against Xavier University of Louisiana on the third and final day of the
Las Vegas Shootout.
Farstveet scored after
Bianca Brown tied the score
for XULA (3-5) with a basket with three seconds remaining.
XULA finished 0-3 in the event and lost for the second straight day in overtime.
NAIA No. 25 Carroll (Mont.) defeated the Gold Nuggets 59-52 Saturday.
Another similarity to the Carroll game: The Gold Nuggets led in the final
minute of regulation before an opponent's 3-pointer tied the score
and forced the extra period. Sunday it was Jayde LeFevre's trey with 17 seconds
remaining for the Bears (6-1) which extended the game.
The Gold Nuggets led 23-19 at halftime, and they
increased their lead to 36-28 after 3-pointers by
Maya Trench,
Ireyon Keith
and
Rosie Davis. But the Bears countered with a 10-2 run, including a
pair of LeFevre 3-pointers, to tie the score at 38 by the end of the third quarter.
Eboney Jackson had 14 points and 10 rebounds
for Rocky Mountain. LeFevre and Mikayla Jones scored 12 apiece —
LeFevre made four 3-pointers — and Farstveet scored 10, including
8-of-10 free throws.
Freshman
Essence Wells had career highs of 10 points and
six rebounds for XULA. Brown scored a season-high 10, all after halftime, and was 4-of-5 from the floor.
Maya Trench had nine points and seven rebounds, and
Jalyn Hodge scored eight.
Hodge and Davis both made a pair of 3-pointers.
XULA outshot the Bears 33.8 to 28.3 percent from the floor and had a 7-5
advantage in made 3-pointers. But Rocky Mountain dominated at the line, making
22-of-31 free throws to the Gold Nuggets' 8-of-13, and the Bears outrebounded
XULA 48-44. The teams committed 13 turnovers apiece.
The loss was the Gold Nuggets' fifth in a row
after opening the season with three consecutive victories. The losing
streak is XULA's longest since a five-game skid in November 2002.
XULA will travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to
play William Carey at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Gold Nuggets will play LSU-Shreveport
at 7 p.m. Thursday and Langston at 5 p.m. Friday at the Convocation Center
in the 15th edition of the Xavier Classic.
