Nuggets' streak ends in overtime at Philander Smith

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Xavier University of Louisiana women's basketball rallied from a 14-point first-half deficit Monday before losing 80-73 in overtime at Philander Smith.
Freshman guard Rosie Davis made five 3-pointers and scored a career-high 21 points for the Gold Nuggets (12-7, 3-1 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference), whose six-game win streak ended.
Terralyn Dominick had 24 points, nine rebounds and four assists for the Lady Panthers (9-8, 2-3). Philander Smith's other three double-figure scorers — Minyone Hill (16 points), Honchea Thornton (13) and Tiffany Richardson (11) — all recorded season highs.
Neither team scored in regulation after Anqunett Chatt made 1-of-2 free throws for Philander Smith with 1:29 remaining to tie the score at 65. XULA scored first in overtime on a Davis 3-pointer, but Philander Smith outscored XULA 11-2 in the final 2 1/2 minutes, including nine free throws.
The Lady Panthers dominated at the line, making 27-of-44 free throws to Xavier's 16-of-23. In overtime, Philander Smith made 11-of-16 to XULA's 3-of-4.
Philander Smith outshot XULA 42.1 to 30.1 percent from the floor. The Gold Nuggets set a school record by attempting 35 3-pointers; the previous mark was 31 against Spring Hill on Feb. 21, 2008. The Gold Nuggets made seven 3's — freshman Essence Wells had the other two.
Philander Smith outrebounded XULA 49-42. The Gold Nuggets were plus-9 in turnovers, committing 17 turnovers and gaining 26.
After trailing 38-24 late in the second quarter and 38-26 at halftime, XULA rallied and used an 8-0 run — two Davis 3-pointers and an Ireyon Keith basket — to take its largest lead, 60-56, at 6:15 of the fourth quarter.
XULA's other double-figure scorer was Bianca Brown, who had 11 points, one short of her career high, and six rebounds. Jayla Nichols had eight points and eight rebounds, and newcomer Brittany Thomas scored seven. Jordan Coleman had four assists and a game- and career-best four steals.
XULA lost for the fourth consecutive year at Philander Smith and the second time in three years in overtime. The Gold Nuggets are 0-3 this season in overtime.
The Gold Nuggets will play Dillard at 3 p.m. Saturday at XULA's Convocation Center in the Crosstown Classic. Tickets for the doubleheader are available through a secure online website at XULAtix.com.
