NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana hit a
season-high .364 Monday to defeat Edward Waters 25-16, 25-11, 25-12 in a matchup
of the hottest volleyball teams in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.
The Gold Nuggets (7-1, 2-0) extended their win streak to
six matches and snapped the five-match win streak of the Lady Tigers (6-2, 3-1).
XULA is six-time defending champion of the GCAC regular season and tournament.
Vivica Price-Spraggins hit .538,
Hasani Salaam .533 and
Juliana Tomasoni .524 for XULA. Tomasoni had match highs of 12 kills and 15 digs.
Kayla Black had 11 kills and 10 digs, and
Anna Dalla Vecchia had 13 digs.
Price-Spraggins, a freshman, hit .545 in the
last four matches — 33 kills and three errors in 55 attacks —
and leads the team for the season at .429.
Kaylin Davison, the preseason GCAC Player of the Year,
had six kills for Edward Waters, which hit a season-worst .063 and is 0-14 all time against XULA.
The teams will meet again Oct. 14 in Jacksonville, Fla.
XULA and Dillard (1-0) are the only teams still
unbeaten in GCAC matches. They will not meet until Sept. 28 at XULA.
The Gold Nuggets will play GCAC opponent Talladega
at 1 p.m. Saturday at XULA's Convocation Center.
