SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — Xavier University of Louisiana women's basketball,
0-of-10 on second-half 3-pointers in its opener, made amends Saturday
in a 64-53 victory against Lawrence Tech in the Lawrence Tech Blue Devil Classic.
The Gold Nuggets made 7-of-10 second-half 3s against
the Blue Devils to erase a 27-25 halftime deficit. XULA made 5-of-7 treys
— 2-of-2 apiece by
Caprice Taylor and
Shaelynn Moore —
during the third quarter, which XULA won 23-12.
XULA was 10-of-17 overall on 3s, with Moore and
Da'Jha Virgil
making three apiece.
Moore scored 12 points and Virgil 11, and Taylor,
Kira Mercado
and
O.C. Mbakop Ngassam scored seven apiece. Moore, a 5-foot-6 shooting guard, grabbed
seven rebounds to lead XULA for the second consecutive game.
Danielle Hanson scored 17 points and Kendall Fisher 14 for the Blue Devils.
XULA outshot Lawrence Tech 41.7 to 29.4 percent from the floor
and outrebounded the Blue Devils 40-33.
"We made some big 3s when we couldn't Friday," XULA head coach
Bo Browder said.
"We played well defensively in the third and fourth quarters. Our post players helped us out, too."
Both teams are 1-1. UM-Dearborn finished as the event's only 2-0 team
after defeating Point Park 84-68 in the other Saturday game.
The Gold Nuggets will play their home opener at 6 p.m. Tuesday
against William Carey at the Convocation Center.
