Lady Rams shut down XULA in 58-43 decision

MOBILE, Ala. — Xavier University of Louisiana women's basketball, playing on the road for the first time this season, lost 58-43 Wednesday to Mobile.
XULA (2-1) shot 31 percent from the floor, didn't make a 3-pointer and got outrebounded by six. It was Mobile's opener.
Rayna Ross, with 10 points, was XULA's lone double-figure scorer. Nia Bishop and O.C. Mbakop Ngassam scored six points apiece, Victory Udechi had five points and eight rebounds, and Abryhia Irons had three of XULA's 10 steals.
Lauren Bodino and Kelsey Pinera scored 14 points for the Lady Rams, and Artasia McDowell had 13 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and two steals. Nautika Philpot had eight assists.
It was the first time in 102 games that XULA failed to make a 3-pointer. XULA missed four attempts, all in the first half.
XULA's only lead was 2-0. It was 9-8 at 4:12 of the first quarter after a pair of Ross free throws, then Pinera and Marquise Cobbs scored four points apiece in an 11-4 run that helped Mobile pull away. It was 29-17 at halftime, and the Lady Rams' biggest lead was 42-22 after Erica Jones made 1-of-2 free throws at 3:38 of the third quarter.
XULA scored its fewest points ever against Mobile and, for the first time, dropped its third straight against the Lady Rams. XULA leads the series, which began in 1988, 49-20.
XULA's next game will tip off at 3 p.m. Nov. 14 — one week from Saturday — against LSU-Alexandria at XULA's Convocation Center.
