NEW ORLEANS — An Antwan Beans
3-point play with 7.5 seconds remaining in the second overtime Thursday lifted Tougaloo
to a 91-90 men's basketball victory against Xavier University of Louisiana.
The Bulldogs (2-5) snapped XULA's 18-game
home win streak.
Rayshawn Mart had 38 points and 12 rebounds,
both career highs, for XULA, and the senior standout set a school record by playing
all 50 minutes. Mart missed a short shot on the right side of the lane as time expired; Tougaloo center
Karl Johnson, four inches taller than Mart, contested the attempt.
This was a non-league game.
XULA beat Tougaloo 78-51 Jan. 11 in the teams' matchup during the first segment of
Gulf Coast Athletic Conference group play. That second segment
will begin Monday at XULA, including a 5 p.m. meeting between XULA and Dillard,
both 3-0 in GCAC games.
Tougaloo rallied from a nine-point
deficit in the final five minutes of regulation.
The Bulldogs had five double-figure scorers,
led by Trajan Fielder with 19 points and Beans with 16.
Jeremy Lindsey scored 16
points for XULA, and
Corey Dunning and
Gary Smith scored 10 apiece.
Dunning blocked five shots, giving him 11 in the past two games.
XULA's
TJ Jones had a season-high 11 assists
and reached double figures for the third time in his career.
Mart scored the most points by a XULA
individual in a game since Juan Mercier's 39 on the road against Alabama State
on Nov. 28, 1987, and the most in a home game since Evan Robinson's 40 against
Delta State at The Barn on Feb. 25, 1978. Mart reached 20 points for the seventh
time this season, including three games in which he reached 25 points and 10 rebounds.
The previous XULA individual
record for minutes played was 46 minutes, 55 seconds by Wanto Joseph
in a three-overtime loss at city rival Loyola on Dec. 17, 2011.
XULA lost at home for the first
time since an 85-84 homecoming decision against NCAA Division II LeMoyne-Owen on Nov. 9, 2019.
