Taylor McGee's
career-high-tying 11 kills and season-high .400 hitting percentage powered Xavier University of
Louisiana to a 25-11, 25-18, 25-10 Red River Athletic Conference volleyball victory
Saturday against Jarvis Christian.
The Gold Nuggets (5-6 overall, 5-1 RRAC)
won for the fifth time in seven matches and snapped the two-match win streak
of the Bulldogs (3-14, 2-3).
XULA outhit Jarvis Christian .333 to .011 for the match and
.444 to minus-.078 in the odd-numbered sets.
XULA, led by McGee's five kills and .625 hitting percentage,
hit .481 in winning the first set. McGee, a junior, reached double-digit kills for the third time at XULA
and posted her best hitting percentage with a minimum of 10 attacks since August 2019.
"There was good setter connection with
Semira Blair,"
McGee said. "There was good passing by the defense to set up the offense, and I was available in
transition. I just tried to be a good teammate."
XULA had advantages of 41-22 in kills, 9-1 in aces
and 44-37 in digs.
Kennedy Wade and
Stella Dineva had six kills apiece, Blair had 18 assists, and Blair
and
Maddie Meyer served two aces apiece.
Linda Mungai had 13 digs, and McGee and
Adaeze Crenshaw had
two blocks apiece.
Fifth-year standout
Vivica Price-Spraggins continued
her recent surge. She produced four kills without an error in seven attacks and is hitting
.469 — 25 kills, two errors and 49 attacks — in the last four matches.
XULA scored its final six points on kills —
two apiece by Price-Spraggins and Wade, and the last one by McGee to end the 57-minute match.
Freshman Kaliyah Timmons hit .375 with eight kills
and three blocks for Jarvis Christian.
XULA will play host to city rival
Loyola at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Convocation Center to conclude a four-match home stand.
It will be the Gold Nuggets' only match next week and their next-to-last home
match of the regular season. Loyola on Saturday snapped the 11-match win streak
of another city rival, Dillard, with a 25-19, 25-10, 25-13 decision at Dillard.
Loyola (12-6) won its sixth in a row and outhit the Lady Bleu Devils .449 to minus-.087
in the final two sets.
