NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana
baseball completed a three-game sweep of Rust by winning 2-1 and 4-0 in a Saturday doubleheader
at Wesley Barrow Stadium.
XULA, 11-3 in its first varsity season since 1960,
extended its winning streak to seven games.
In the opener,
Blair Frederick — the winning pitcher Friday in a 9-1 decision
— doubled home
Danny Coleman and
Jose Fulgencio
in the fourth inning to put XULA ahead to stay. Right-hander
Nigel Mayfield (2-1) went the distance,
allowing four hits and one walk and striking out 10. Mayfield is the first XULA pitcher to strike out 10
in a game this season.
XULA scored all its second-game runs in the third inning.
Coleman hit a two-run single, and Fulgencio singled home another run.
Pitchers
Juwan Fitch,
Ryan Kinney,
Jonathan Allen and
Jamal Allen combined on the shutout, allowing two hits and walking eight.
XULA outscored opponents 25-2 in the last four games, including a pair of shutouts.
Rust freshman Dreylin Holmes entered the series among the NAIA leaders with a .525 batting average, but Holmes wnt 1-for-9
in three games against XULA.
Rust is 10-13 with a five-game losing streak.
