TALLADEGA, Ala. —
Defending champion Xavier University of Louisiana rolled Friday to a 25-15, 25-14,
25-7 volleyball victory against Edward Waters in the semifinals of
the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
For the second straight year and
the third time in four years, XULA will play city rival Dillard for the championship.
They'll meet at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the winner earning the GCAC's automatic
bid to NAIA nationals.
A victory against Dillard would give
XULA its 10th consecutive GCAC Tournament championship.
Against Edward Waters, XULA used a 9-1
run to extend a 14-11 first-set lead. XULA closed the second set on a 14-4 run
and in the third set scored the first seven points and led 20-4.
Kayla Black hit .375 with 12 kills,
11 digs and two blocks for XULA, which outhit Edward Waters .262 to minus-.074.
XULA (17-4) won its 13th in a row, which
matches its second-longest win streak. Edward Waters finished 4-12.
Dillard defeated Philander Smith
25-8, 25-17, 19-25, 25-22 in the other semifinal.
