NAIA No. 11 Central Methodist defeats XULA in 4 sets

        ST. LOUIS — NAIA No. 11 Central Methodist erased a fourth-set deficit to clinch a 25-17, 24-26, 25-17, 25-23 volleyball victory against Xavier University of Louisiana in the Spartan Invitational.
        The Eagles are 9-0, and the Gold Nuggets are 0-2.
        Central Methodist ended the match after trailing 9-4 and 12-8 in the fourth set.
        Giulia Follador had 14 kills, 10 digs, an ace and hit .312. Follador, a sophomore newcomer, has produced kill-dig double-doubles in both XULA matches this season.
        It was XULA's first match in two weeks. Six XULA matches were canceled because of Hurricane Ida, which made landfall Aug. 29 in southeast Louisiana.
        Other XULA statistical leaders were:
        •  Stella Dineva with 13 kills, one block and a .417 hitting percentage.
        •  Vivica Price-Spraggins with 10 kills, two blocks and a .421 hitting percentage.
        •  Kendall Mack with eight kills.
        •  Kennedy Wade with six kills, 14 digs and a block.
        •  Linda Mungai with 20 digs and two aces for the second consecutive match.
        •  Semira Blair with 25 assists, an ace and eight digs.
        •  Emi Riglioni with 21 assists and eight digs.
        Sydney Healy had nine kills for Central Methodist, and Annabelle Maassen, Jordan Wolfe and Grace Unnvik produced eight apiece. Unnvik had five blocks, Krystal Brauner had 20 digs, and Shea Luby served three aces.
        XULA had a 56-45 advantage in kills, but the Gold Nuggets committed 52 total errors, 22 more than the Eagles. Central Methodist outhit XULA .246 to .178.
        It was the first of two XULA matches Friday against ranked opponents. The Gold Nuggets were scheduled to meet No. 1 and defending national champion Missouri Baptist at 7 p.m. Missouri Baptist, the tournament host, defeated 20th-ranked Lindsey Wilson 29-27, 20-25, 25-16, 25-21 in the opening match.
