TEXARKANA, Texas —
Makye Richard's 16 points, five assists and career-high-tying 14 rebounds Thursday led
NAIA No. 19 Xavier University
of Louisiana to a 72-57 Red River Athletic Conference men's basketball victory
against Texas A&M-Texarkana.
XULA (11-2 overall, 2-1 RRAC) recorded its eighth double-digit
victory this season and its first on the road. The Gold Rush are 3-0 on opponents' courts.
Richard grabbed 10 first-half rebounds and
scored 14 second-half points. The double-double was his second of the season
and the 11th of his college career.
TJ Jones and
Lance Williams scored 11 points
apiece for the Gold Rush, and
Nigel Allen scored 10. Williams, Allen and
Jeremy Lindsey
made two 3-pointers apiece.
Corey Dunning grabbed nine rebounds for the
third consecutive game, and he and Richard led XULA to a 40-22 rebound advantage.
Connor Ouellette scored 16 points for the Eagles (7-4, 0-2,
and Kelton Edwards and Jordan Mitchell scored 12 apiece.
XULA led 28-19 at halftime and built
its largest advantage, 65-41, on Lindsey's 3-pointer with 3:45 remaining.
The Gold Rush outshot the Eagles 43.9 to 36.4
from the floor. XULA attempted a season-best 27 free throws but struggled again with accuracy,
making 14 for 51.9 percent — the seventh time this season that XULA shot less than 60 percent.
The 11-2 start is XULA's first since the 2012-13 season.
XULA's Saturday RRAC home doubleheader against Wiley
was rescheduled for Feb. 22 at the Convocation Center. Next for XULA will be a Monday non-conference doubleheader
at Tougaloo — women's game at 5:30 p.m., men's game at 7:30.
