to lead Xavier University of Louisiana men's basketball to a 67-49 victory
against Johnson C. Smith in the opening round of the Boost Mobile Chris Paul HBCU Tip Off.
The Gold Rush (4-0), playing for the
first time in the northeastern United States, will meet Virginia Union (3-0)
for the championship at 3:30 p.m. EST Wednesday.
Virginia Union defeated Clark Atlanta 79-61 in the other first-round game.
XULA is 4-0 for the first time in four seasons.
The Gold Rush shot a season-best 50 percent
from the floor and led for 38 1/2 minutes. XULA limited Ezekiel Cannedy —
a freshman guard who averaged 25.5 points in his first two games — to 11 points in 23 minutes.
Cannedy committed five of the Golden Bulls' 23 turnovers.
Johnson C. Smith (1-2) will play
Clark Atlanta in the third-place game at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
