ALEXANDRIA, La. —

Cory Wells and
TJ Jones combined for 54 points Sunday to lead
Xavier University of Louisiana men's basketball to a 74-58 victory against Southwest (N.M.)
in the quarterfinals of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Gold Rush (22-5), winning for the fourth
straight time and the 11th time in the last 12 games, will play
Louisiana Christian (14-13) in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. CST Monday at Rapides Parish Coliseum (5600 Coliseum Blvd., Alexandria, LA 71303-3747).
Tickets are available online via Ticketmaster, but fans can avoid the surcharge and pay $10 at the door.
Louisiana Christian defeated Texas A&M-Texarkana
83-77 in the final game Sunday to become the fourth Louisiana team to reach the RRAC men's semifinals.
LSU-Alexandria and defending champion LSU-Shreveport also advanced.
Richard scored 20 points, Wells scored a career-best 18 points,
and Jones scored 16. They combined to make 7-of-13 3-pointers.
XULA's
Cameron Wells — Cory's older brother — scored eight points and had game highs
of four assists and three steals, and
Corey Dunning grabbed six rebounds.
Latarryus Smith scored 14 points, Jeremiah Toney 12,
Alvin Thompson 11 and Brandon Meadows 10 for Southwest (10-16). Matthews grabbed eight rebounds.
XULA scored the first seven points, but Southwest scored
the next 11.
Jeremy Lindsey swished a 35-footer at the buzzer to give the Gold Rush a 40-34 halftime lead,
and XULA pulled away with a 16-2 run to start the second half. Richard opened the second half with a 3,
then
Cory Wells made 3s on the next two possesions.
Cory Wells is 5-of-8 on 3s in the last two games after
making 1-of-13 in his first 20 games this season.
XULA shot 50 percent from the floor and was plus-8
in turnovers. It was XULA's 16th double-digit victory this season
and its seventh this month.
In the other quarterfinal games, LSU-Alexandria defeated Huston-Tillotson 89-75,
and LSU-Shreveport defeated Our Lady of the Lake 97-88.
