ALEXANDRIA, La. —
Victory Udechi's
fifth double-double of the season — 13 points and 10 rebounds — led
Xavier University of Louisiana women's basketball in a 58-48 victory against Southwest (N.M.)
in the quarterfinals of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament Sunday morning.
The Gold Nuggets (21-5) extended their
win streak to 15. They'll play LSU-Shreveport, a 59-45 winner against Huston-Tillotson,
in the semifinals at 1 p.m. CST Monday at Rapides Parish Coliseum (5600 Coliseum Blvd., Alexandria, LA 71303-3747).
Tickets are available online via Ticketmaster, but fans can avoid the surcharge and pay $10 at the door.
Udechi also had five steals, two assists and a blocked shot.
XULA's
Da'Jha Virgil produced 12 points, two assists, two steals and
a career-high-tying seven rebounds.
Abryhia Irons had 10 points, five assists and three steals, and
Rayna Ross
had eight points and three steals.
Harlei Haceesa had 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists
for Southwest (5-22).
XULA scored the first seven points in a wire-to-wire victory.
The Gold Nuggets led 29-23 at halftime, and a Virgil 3-pointer at 6:02 of the third quarter produced
the largest lead, 40-25. Shanyce Cabrales' 3-pointer with 6:20 remaining cut XULA's lead to 47-43,
but Irons scored consecutive baskets during a 7-2 spurt that helped XULA clinch.
XULA produced 17 steals, outshot the Mustangs 40.7 to 34.6 percent from the floor and had an 18-0 advantage
in fast-break points.
In the other quarterfinal games, Louisiana Christian defeated Texas A&M-Texarkana 62-54,
and Our Lady of the Lake defeated LSU-Alexandria 73-58.
It was the sixth time this season
that XULA allowed less than 50 points. It was the first time
the Gold Nuggets did it in a conference tournament since the 2015 Gulf Coast
Athletic quarterfinals. This is XULA's first season in the RRAC.
It was the 20th time in
Bo Browder's 23 seasons as
head coach that the Gold Nuggets reached the semifinals of a conference tournament.
XULA's win streak is its longest since 21 in a row
during the 2009-10 season. XULA's 1997-98 team produced the program's longest win streak of the
Title IX era, 22 games.
