Freshman Chargois strikes out XULA-record 15 batters, but Lane sweeps Gold Nuggets

NEW ORLEANS — Freshman right-hander Carina Chargois struck out a Xavier University of Louisiana record 15 batters Wednesday, but Lane swept the softball doubleheader — 4-3, then 8-6 in 12 innings — at Wesley Barrow Stadium.
Chargois set the record in the opener, but she missed a chance for a victory when the Dragons collected three straight hits in the seventh — a Raelynn Lee single, a Jayden McCarty RBI double and a Millay Lambert RBI triple — after Chargois struck out the first two batters of that inning.
XULA got RBI doubles from Mecolett Bradley and Destyn Jones — Jones gave the Gold Nuggets a 3-2 lead in the fifth — and an RBI single from Alison Curlin.
Chargois struck out seven of the first nine batters.
The Gold Nuggets never led in the second game but Tamia Washington's two-run homer in the fifth tied the score at 4. Both teams scored twice in the ninth, and Savanna Johnson's two-run single in the 12th put Lane ahead to stay.
Curlin had three hits in the second game, including an RBI single in the third. Bradley hit a sacrifice fly in that inning. Shay Angelle singled home a run in the ninth.
XULA — a longtime NAIA member in its second season of varsity softball — is 5-11. Lane, a member of NCAA Division II, is 7-0. XULA head coach Leslie Ballard is a Lane graduate, played softball for Lane and was the Dragons' head coach for three seasons.
XULA will compete this weekend in the GCI Invitational at Gulf Shores, Ala. The next home date will be a Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader against Texas College at 3 p.m. March 11 at Wesley Barrow.
