NEW ORLEANS —
Xavier Reaves' sixth double-double of the season — 18 points and 10 rebounds, both game highs —
led Xavier University of Louisiana in a wire-to-wire 64-51 Red River Athletic Conference men's basketball victory
Thursday against LSU-Alexandria.
The Gold Rush (13-6 overall, 8-4 RRAC)
swept a two-game regular-season series against the Generals (14-7, 8-5) for the first time.
LSUA leads the series 7-3, but XULA won the three most recent meetings.
Reaves had 12 points and nine rebounds in the
second half to help XULA pull away — it was 29-25 at halftime — and replace LSUA
as the RRAC's third-place team.
The top six in the RRAC:
Texas A&M-Texarkana at 11-3, followed by LSU-Shreveport at 10-3, XULA, LSUA, Paul Quinn at 7-6
and Our Lady of the Lake at 6-6. XULA will visit LSUS at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Cory Wells scored 12 points for XULA,
and
Cameron Wells and
Lance Williams had 10 apiece. Wells reached double figures
for the first time this season.
Willie Lapoole, with 11 points, was LSUA's
only double-figure scorer.
"Defense, defense, defense," seventh-year
XULA head coach Alfred Williams said. "That's the trademark of Xavier basketball.
I am excited that we are taking steps to improve daily and show championship effort."
The teams combined for 17 blocked shots, 10 by LSUA.
XULA, which entered the game No. 4 in the NAIA in scoring defense, limited an opponent to
less than 60 points for the second straight game and the seventh time this season.
