NEW ORLEANS — Simone Tyson's
four kills and Xavier University of Louisiana's seven attack errors in the fifth set
helped city rival Loyola prevail in a 28-26, 21-25, 29-27, 15-25, 15-7 women's volleyball
decision at XULA's Convocation Center.
The Wolf Pack (19-4) have won eight
straight and snapped the 12-match win streak of the Gold Nuggets (15-5). Loyola beat
XULA in the Convocation Center for the first time ever after seven defeats.
XULA had two set points in the first set
and seven more in the third.
Tyson finished with 15 kills and 17 digs,
both team highs. Loyola never trailed in the fifth and scored five of the first six points in that set.
XULA statistical leaders included
Kennedy Wade with 22 kills, 12 digs and three blocks,
Sydney Murray with six aces —
a career high and the most by a Gold Nugget in a match this season — 18 kills and two blocks,
Stella Dineva with 13 kills and eight digs,
Bengisu Kazazlar with 52 assists, a season high,
and 16 digs,
Taylor Parker with seven kills and five blocks, and
Ruxandra Flueras with a match-high 23 digs.
Murray's kill total was her season high.
For Loyola, Juliana Pacini served four aces,
and Ellie Connor had three. Alexa Palmer and Amaya Bazemore had seven blocks apiece,
and Emily Sheperis had four.
For the match XULA outhit Loyola .195 to .154 —
Loyola hit 101 points lower than it did in its first 22 matches — and the Gold Nuggets
had advantages of 63-55 in kills, 9-8 in aces, 71-63 in digs and 110-108 in points. Loyola led 13-9 in blocks.
XULA, in first place in the Red River
Athletic Conference, has the bye this weekend in the nine-team league schedule.
Next for the Gold Nuggets will be a two-match RRAC home series against
Jarvis Christian: 7 p.m. Oct. 27 and noon Oct. 28.
