Tatjana Tatar made two 3-pointers from the left corner in the final five minutes Thursday, keying a 10-2 run that lifted Xavier University of Louisiana to a 65-56 women's basketball victory against University of Southwest.
It was the Red River Athletic Conference opener for both teams. The Gold Nuggets (4-0) will stay on the road and play Paul Quinn in Dallas in an RRAC game at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Tatar's 4-point play with 4:57 remaining gave XULA a 54-49 lead. Tatar's 3-pointer at 2:42 made it 58-51.
XULA outscored Southwest 40-25 in the second half after trailing 31-25 at halftime.
Taylor Dewitt scored 17 points,
Zaria Harleaux 11 and Tatar 10 the Gold Nuggets. Karinna Ortiz scored 17 points, Milinda Arguellez 15, Celina Celaya 11 and Abigail Olivas 10 for the Mustangs (4-3).
Southwest entered scoring an RRAC-leading 86.2 points per game.
XULA made 28-of-40 free throws to Southwest's 6-of-13. Dewitt was 9-of-10 from the line, Harleaux was 5-of-10, and
Jordyn Manning and
Rayna Ross were 4-of-4 apiece.
