NEW ORLEANS — LSU-Alexandria outscored Xavier University of Louisiana in every quarter Thursday to earn a 58-49 Red River Athletic Conference women's basketball victory.
It was the Gold Nuggets' first conference loss and first home loss of the season. XULA and LSUA both are 9-3 overall and tied for second place in the RRAC at 6-1.
The Generals took the lead for good in the eighth minute. It was 40-39 with 6:49 remaining after a
Rayna Ross basket for XULA, but LSUA scored the next eight points — including two Jewel Jones 3-pointers — to pull away.
Jones scored 14 points, Raegan Ojoro 13 and Amani Gray 11 for LSUA. Ojoro grabbed 11 rebounds — her third consecutive double-double and fourth in the last five games — and made 4-of-4 free throws in the final 31 seconds.
Ross, with 12 points, was XULA's only double-figure scorer.
Taylor Dewitt, who entered with a XULA-leading 15.5 points per game, scored a season-low six, all on free throws.
XULA shot a season-worst 23.3 percent from the floor and made 3-of-27 3-pointers. LSUA dominated at the line, making 23-of-27 free throws to the Gold Nuggets' 12-of-17.
LSU-Shreveport, which began the day in a first-place tie with XULA, improved to 7-0 in the RRAC with its 99-39 home victory against Jarvis Christian. Two teams are 5-2 in the conference, including North American, XULA's Monday opponent.
XULA will play host to RRAC opponent Louisiana Christian at 2 p.m. Saturday. That will be the opener of a doubleheader; the XULA and LCU men will tip off at 4 p.m.
