Gold Nuggets prevail in overtime

TEXARKANA, Texas — Xavier University of Louisiana made 8-of-8 free throws in overtime Saturday to earn a 57-48 Red River Athletic Conference women's basketball victory against Texas A&M-Texarkana.
The Gold Nuggets (12-4 overall, 9-2 RRAC) remained in third place in the league, 1 1/2 games behind leader LSU-Shreveport.
XULA scored more points in the five-minute extra period than it did in the first, second or fourth quarters. It was 45-all at the end of regulation. The final point of the fourth quarter was 1-of-2 free throws by the Eagles' Jaslyn Woods with 42 seconds remaining. Teammate Brianna Richardson missed a jumper at the buzzer.
XULA scored the first six points of overtime — two Jaleah LaFargue free throws and two Zaria Harleaux baskets — and never lost the lead thereafter. Harleaux and Taylor Dewitt combined for six free throws in the final 39 seconds.
Dewitt led XULA with 14 points, followed by Shylia McGee with 12 and Harleaux and Patricia Sosa Lora with eight apiece. McGee grabbed nine rebounds and LaFargue seven, both season highs.
Kayla Williams scored 15 points, Delfina Misiuna 14 and Woods 10 for TAMUT (9-7, 6-4). Williams had nine rebounds.
XULA led 21-20 at halftime and 34-32 through three quarters.
It was the fewest points the XULA women allowed in an overtime game during the Title IX era. In three seasons in the RRAC, the Gold Nuggets are 3-0 in league games that went overtime.
It was the third road game of the week for the Gold Nuggets, who will play RRAC home games at 5:30 p.m. Thursday against Southwest (N.M.) and 2 p.m. Saturday against Paul Quinn.
