BATON ROUGE, La. — Flau'jae Johnson's 30 points and 10 rebounds Thursday led seventh-ranked LSU to a 114-53 women's basketball exhibition victory against Xavier University of Louisiana.
The Gold Nuggets will open their regular season at 11 a.m. Monday in their Convocation Center against Life University.
Johnson, the SEC Freshman of the Year in 2022-23, was 13-of-19 from the floor in 29 minutes.
XULA newcomers Kam Shelley and Joy Campbell combined for 31 points and 55-percent floor shooting. Shelley, a transfer from Langston, produced 16 points — she made 4-of-7 3-pointers — six rebounds and two steals in 28 minutes. Campbell, a transfer from Old Dominion, scored 15 points, was 6-of-9 from the floor and had a game-high six assists.
The Gold Nuggets did not miss a shot — 3-of-3 from the floor, 3-of-3 from the line — in grabbing a 10-9 lead through three minutes. But LSU scored 11 consecutive points in the next 1:50 en route to a 68-19 halftime lead.
Shelley scored 10 points and made three 3-pointers to help XULA outscore LSU 23-21 in the third quarter.
LSU overall outshot XULA 58.2 to 34 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Gold Nuggets 46-28. LSU committed 15 turnovers and gained 33.
Monday will be NOLA Metro Schools Education Day, with approximately 1,000 local students from elementary through high school scheduled to attend. McMain High School will sing the Star Spangled Banner pregame. St. Katharine Drexel High School's band will perform. There will be campus tours for students before the game. Students will meet XULA athletes from many sports.
