Freshman Anais Velasquez hit .345 with 15 kills and three blocks Friday evening to lead
second-seeded Our Lady of the Lake to a 19-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-21
women's volleyball victory against third-seeded Xavier University of Louisiana
in the semifinals of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Saints ended three lengthy XULA streaks.
XULA had won 13 consecutive conference tournaments,
earned 13 consecutive bids to NAIA nationals and won 33 consecutive matches in conference tournaments.
Camila Ramirez hit .293 with 14 kills
for the Saints (22-8), and Tina Trevino had 16 digs.
Freshman
Kamea Uitenham had 16 kills —
her sixth consecutive match with 15 or more — and 16 digs for the Gold Nuggets (17-15).
Taylor Parker his .385 with 13 kills and six blocks,
Kennedy Campbell had eight kills, two blocks
and 13 digs, and
Bengisu Kazazlar produced match highs of 38 assists and 17 digs.
OLLU outhit XULA .194 to .135 —
.185 to .087 in the final three sets.
XULA was 3-0 the past three years against OLLU
in the RRAC Tournament, all five-set victories in championship matches.
The Saints will play host to top-seeded
Texas A&M-Texarkana — a 25-16, 25-15, 25-17 winner against fourth-seeded Louisiana Christian in the first
semifinal — at 1 p.m. Saturday for the championship and the Red River's automatic bid to NAIA nationals.
