2024-25 Red River Athletic Conference men's basketball standings
NEW ORLEANS —
It required a few minutes, but Xavier University of Louisiana men's
basketball found a better groove Saturday in its first victory of the regular season,
75-57 against Texas A&M-San Antonio at the Convocation Center.
The Gold Rush (1-2 overall, 1-1
Red River Athletic Conference) overcame seven turnovers and a 12-point deficit through the
first seven minutes to snap a four-game losing streak that started last season.
James Weathers scored 19 points,
Lance Williams
16 and
Seviuhn Turner 13 for XULA. Freshman
Wayne Randall-Bashay grabbed 10 rebounds, and
Corey Dunning blocked three shots.
"Better intensity. That's what it was about,"
Williams said. "We know that 0-and-2 is not the standard here.
The level of focus had to improve, and it did."
Williams scored six points during a 20-6
first-half run that answered the Jaguars' 16-4 start. Turner's 3-pointer in the 16th minute
put XULA ahead to stay at 24-22. XULA led 35-30 at halftime, and three times in the second half
the Gold Rush led by 24.
XULA outrebounded TAMUSA 53-29 and turned 20 offensive
rebounds into 22 second-chance points. Turner grabbed seven rebounds, and Dunning had six.
Antwone Gonzales scored 19 points and Felix Grief 14
for TAMUSA (1-3, 1-1), a fifth-year Red River member in its first basketball season.
XULA outshot the Jaguars 41.1 to 35.7 percent from
the floor. The Gold Rush shot a season-best 84.6 percent from the line (11-of-13).
XULA will visit a city rival, Loyola (1-4),
at 7:30 p.m. Monday at The Den. It will be a doubleheader;
the women of XULA and Loyola will tip off at 5:30 p.m. XULA will bus to Texas for RRAC doubleheaders
Thursday at North American and Saturday at Huston-Tillotson.
