2024-25 Red River Athletic Conference men's basketball standings
NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana took the lead for good in the ninth minute Monday and rolled to an 89-72 Red River Athletic Conference men's basketball victory against NAIA No. 6 LSU-Alexandria at the Convocation Center.
The Gold Rush (5-2 overall, 4-1 RRAC) have won five straight. XULA defeated a top-six opponent for the first time in six years.
Season highs of 24 points from
James Weathers and 15 points apiece from
Wayne Randall-Bashay and
Omarion Bodrick helped XULA offset a season-low eight points from season scoring leader
Lance Williams. Also in double figures for the Gold Rush were
Seviuhn Turner with 13 points and
Jathen Ross with 11.
Turner and Ross made three 3-pointers apiece, and Weathers made two. Turner had eight rebounds, seven assists and four of XULA's season-high 11 blocked shots.
      Â
Corey Dunning blocked four shots for XULA, and Bodrick had three. Williams had five rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Kashie Natt had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Generals (6-1, 3-1), and EJ McQuillan scored 14. Jason Perry scored 11 points and made three 3s.
Bodrick's basket at 11:35 of the first half put the Gold Rush ahead to stay at 16-14. It was 40-31 at halftime, and the outcome still was in doubt after McQuillan's two free throws made it 51-48 with 10:49 remaining. But Ross, Weathers and Turner answered with 3s in the next five minutes — Ross made two — and Williams' basket at 4:06 gave XULA a double-digit lead until the buzzer.
XULA outshot LSUA 49.2 percent to 33.8 percent from the floor. The Generals' shooting percentage was their season low.
XULA will break for Thanksgiving, then visit LSU-Shreveport in an RRAC game at 5 p.m. CST Monday. The game will be XULA's last before semester exams Dec. 5-11.
LSUS, No. 13 in the NAIA preseason coaches poll, is 4-4 and 1-3 after a 77-76 Tuesday home loss to Louisiana Christian.
