NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana men's basketball ended a three-game losing streak Thursday with a wire-to-wire 79-41 Red River Athletic Conference victory against Huston-Tillotson.
The Gold Rush (12-5 overall, 11-4 Red River) remained in a second-place tie in the RRAC with Our Lady of the Lake, an 80-63 winner at Jarvis Christian.
Seviuhn Turner scored 23 points and
Lance Williams 19 for XULA, and those two combined to make 8-of-12 3-pointers. Williams was 5-of-6 from long range.
XULA's
J'Quan Ewing had 11 points and seven rebounds and was 5-of-5 from the floor.
James Weathers had eight assists, and he, Williams and
Wayne Randall-Bashay had three steals apiece.
XULA, which entered No. 5 in the NAIA with 5.1 blocked shots per game, produced nine this time. Randall-Bashay had three blocks, and Turner,
Corey Dunning and
Omarion Bodrick had two apiece.
Charles Hallmon led Huston-Tillotson (4-12, 4-10) with eight points, five rebounds and three steals.
XULA outshot the Rams 50 to 26.7 percent from the floor and outrebounded them 43-33. XULA produced assists on 23 of its 28 field goals and made 12-of-24 3s. The Gold Rush led 38-19 at halftime, and the final margin was XULA's largest of the game.
It was the first time this month that XULA competed with all its players available.
XULA will play host to LSU-Shreveport at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
