Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Gold Rush stretch win streak to 10 games

TYLER, Texas — Lance Williams scored 19 points Thursday, and Xavier University of Louisiana men's basketball improved its win streak to 10 games with an 81-65 Red River Athletic Conference victory against Texas College.
The win streak is the longest in Alfred Williams' nine seasons as head coach of the Gold Rush.
Williams — a senior guard who is not related to his coach — led XULA (10-2 overall, 9-1 Red River) in scoring for the sixth time this season and the third game in a row. Williams was 6-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the line in 39 minutes.
Seviuhn Turner had 18 points and eight rebounds and made 6-of-6 free throws for XULA. Jathen Ross scored 12 points. Corey Dunning grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Gold Rush for the fifth consecutive game. Dunning, a fifth-year player, averaged 10.2 rebounds in the last five games.
Four players combined to make a season-best 13 3-pointers for XULA. Turner and Ross made four apiece, Williams made three, and Tracy Steele made two. XULA produced a season-best 14 steals, three apiece by Turner and James Weathers.
Williams and Turner had six assists apiece, and Williams matched his season high.
Domonique Perry scored 16 points for Texas College (5-8, 3-7), Kenneth Montgomery made 4-of-5 3-pointers and scored 14 points, and Percy Chavis had 10 points and eight rebounds.
XULA's 49-27 halftime lead was its largest at an opponent's venue since Nov. 25, 2014.
XULA outshot the Steers 45.9 to 42.1 percent from the floor, outrebounded them 44-29 and ended their three-game home win streak. The Gold Rush remained in a loss-column tie for first place in the RRAC with LSU-Alexandria (13-1, 10-1), which was idle.
It was the Steers' first game since the Dec. 20 death of head coach Walter Yates. Texas College alum and former Wiley head coach Jameus Hartsfield will lead the Steers for the remainder of the season.
The next game for both teams will be against each other: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at XULA's Convocation Center.
In the other RRAC men's games Thursday:
        •  Texas A&M-Texarkana won 76-65 at home against North American
        •  Paul Quinn won 67-66 at home against Texas A&M-San Antonio
        •  Southwest (N.M.) won 99-88 at home against Our Lady of the Lake
