Lauren Banks and
Kam Shelley keyed a second-half run Tuesday that helped unbeaten Xavier University of Louisiana women's basketball defeat Texas College 76-52.
The Gold Nuggets — 14-0 overall, 11-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference and ranked 25th in the NAIA — will travel to San Antonio, Texas, for RRAC games at Texas A&M-San Antonio Thursday and Our Lady of the Lake Saturday.
XULA trailed 39-37 in the 26th minute, then clinched with an 18-2 surge — Shelley scored the first five points, and Banks tacked on eight more — during the next five minutes.
Banks finished with a season-high-tying 21 points, and Shelley scored 12.
Joy Campbell had 13 points, 10 assists and six steals, and
Zaria Harleaux and
Fatima Black grabbed seven rebounds apiece..
Tyler Pyburn, with 20 points, was the only double-figure scorer for the Steers (4-11, 3-9). Pyburn had six rebounds and five assists.
The Gold Nuggets are the only XULA basketball team since 1941, female or male, to start a season with 14 consecutive victories.
