NEW ORLEANS - For the second time this season, Xavier's men's basketball team suffered an overtime loss to crosstown foe Loyola. Two weeks after falling in quadruple overtime, the Gold Rush fell 78-74 in a single extra frame at the Convocation Center.
The loss for Xavier (3-2) overshadowed an otherwise positive showing. The Gold Rush shot a respectable 41.8 percent as a team and committed half as many turnovers as Loyola (5-2), but 27-of-35 shooting at the free-throw line for the Wolfpack - compared to 12-of-20 for XULA - proved a factor.
Four Gold Rush players scored in double figures on the night.
Bentravin Phillips led the way with 20 points and 7 rebounds, but it was Nasir DeGruy who really filled up the stat sheet with 19 points, 7 boards, 9 assists, and 4 steals.
Leon Williams added 11 points, Elijah Tate 10, and Jylan Howze 8.
The Gold Rush have a one-week break before their next game, which will take place at 3 p.m. on Nov. 26 in Stafford, Texas, where Xavier will face North American in XULA's Red River Athletic Conference opener.
