Generals defeat Gold Rush in series opener

ALEXANDRIA, La. — Zach Mengarelli doubled, homered and had five RBIs Thursday to lead LSU-Alexandria to a 23-0 Red River Athletic Conference baseball victory against Xavier University of Louisiana.
The game ended after 6 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule, and it was the conference opener for both teams. The Gold Rush (1-3) and the Generals (5-7) will meet at 1 p.m. Friday in a doubleheader to conclude their three-game series.
Three LSUA pitchers combined on a one-hitter. Winner Josh Pierce (2-2) struck out 10 in five innings. XULA's hit was a none-out single up the middle in the sixth inning by pinch-hitter Brody Caton. Teammate Kai Higginson walked twice.
Luke Benoit and Blaise Foote had three hits apiece for LSUA. Foote doubled twice.
