Gold Rush tame Tigers

DALLAS — J'Quan Ewing's 19 points, 10 rebounds and six steals, all season highs, led Xavier University of Louisiana in an 85-53 Red River Athletic Conference men's basketball victory Thursday against Paul Quinn.
The Gold Rush (18-7 overall, 17-6 Red River) won for the seventh time in nine games. XULA can clinch second place in the league with a victory Saturday against the University of the Southwest in Hobbs, N.M.
Ewing was 8-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-3 from the line in 26 minutes. Ewing, Noah Ogoli, Elijah Pichon, Wayne Randall-Bashay and Jathen Ross were the starters, none of whom started Tuesday in an 81-62 loss at league-leading and NAIA No. 1 LSU-Alexandria.
Randall-Bashay had 11 points, six rebounds and no turnovers, and teammate Seviuhn Turner had 16 points and eight rebounds. Elijah Pichon's eight points and six assists were season highs.
Norris Williams scored 12 points for the Tigers (5-19, 5-16), who have lost eight of their last 10 games.
XULA outshot the Tigers 50.7 to 32.7 percent from the floor and outrebounded them 40-31. XULA made 62.5 percent of its two-pointers (30-of-48). XULA led 44-26 at halftime.
The victory was XULA's 14th this season by double digits and the fourth by 30-or-more points.
Prior to Thursday, Our Lady of the Lake was in a loss-column tie for second place with XULA, but the Saints lost 100-73 at LSUA.
XULA and Southwest will tip off at 3 p.m. MST. The final XULA home appearance of the regular season will be the Crosstown Classic doubleheader Tuesday against Dillard at the Convocation Center. The XULA-DU women's game will tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the men's game at 8.
