NEW ORLEANS —
Sophomore center Jamal Gibson's 25 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots Thursday
led city rival SUNO to an 82-78 men's basketball victory against
Xavier University of Louisiana at SUNO's The Castle.
It was the regular-season finale for both teams.
Gibson has produced a double-double in every game this season
and 54 in the last 55 games.
SUNO led the final 23 1/2 minutes, including 39-35 at halftime
and 76-62 after Gibson's basket with 4:38 remaining. But the Gold Rush (20-8) rallied
before missing a 3-pointer that would have tied the score with 48 seconds remaining.
It was 80-78 after XULA's
Lance Williams made two free throws with 20 seconds remaining,
but the Knights (11-16) clinched six seconds later when Donte Briggs made two free throws.
Williams had 21 points and a season-high eight assists.
XULA's
Omarion Bodrick scored 12 points in 14 minutes, and
Seviuhn Turner had 10 points and four assists.
SUNO had five double-figure scorers, including Briggs with
15 points and Tony White and Tyon Thompson with 12 apiece. White had six assists, six rebounds and three steals.
SUNO outshot XULA 50 to 36.8 percent from the floor.
SUNO snapped its nine-game losing streak against XULA
and won at home against the Gold Rush for the first time in seven attempts. XULA leads the series 80-31.
Next for XULA's men and women will be the quarterfinals
of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament next Thursday at Rapides Parish Coliseum in
Alexandria, La. Both teams are No. 2 seeds.
