NEW ORLEANS —
Xavier University of Louisiana and the University of Southwest will meet
at 4:45 p.m. CST Friday in the women's basketball quarterfinals of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Gold Nuggets (26-2, No. 2 seed, ranked 22nd in the NAIA)
and Mustangs (14-14, No. 7 seed) will play at
Laborde Earles Coliseum — formerly Rapides Parish Coliseum — in Alexandria, La.
XULA is 2-0 against Southwest this season, winning
71-44 at home Dec. 19 and — boosted by
Joy Campbell's school-record-tying 15 assists —
96-70 on the road Feb. 15.
XULA tied its school record for regular-season victories.
The Gold Nuggets also won 26 in 2004-05, 2003-04 and 1993-94. The Gold Nuggets' 18-0 start was their best ever.
The XULA-Southwest winner will play
third-seeded LSU-Alexandria or sixth-seeded Louisiana Christian in
the semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The championship game will tip off at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
Tournament champion will receive an automatic bid to NAIA nationals. The Gold Nuggets have
yet to win an RRAC Tournament title; they were second to LSU-Shreveport a year ago.
XULA defeated Southwest 58-48 in the 2022 RRAC quarterfinals.
