PINEVILLE, La. —
Haley Primrose and Kirsten Martinez combined on a no-hitter
with five strikeouts Thursday to lead NAIA No. 8 LSU-Alexandria to an 8-0 softball victory against
Xavier University of Louisiana in the opening round of the
Red River Athletic Conference Tournament.
The game ended with one out
in the bottom of the fifth inning because of the eight-run mercy rule.
The Gold Nuggets (15-22), seeded seventh
out of eight teams in this double-elimination tournament, will play sixth-seeded
Louisiana Christian (25-26) at noon Friday at LSUA's Generals Softball Field.
XULA would play at 3 p.m. Friday if it defeats LCU.
XULA had four baserunners, all by walks:
Madison Winston in the first inning,
Amireeya Malveaux in the second and
Destiny Lavigne and
Jayda Martin in the fifth. Winston and Martin, both with stolen bases, were the only
Gold Nuggets to reach scoring position.
The Generals — 44-5, seeded second and winner of nine straight —
scored four runs in the second inning and four in the fifth. RRAC Player of the Year Julia Kwakernaak
and Jillian Howell hit run-scoring doubles, and Kilee Moody led off the fifth with a home run.
The no-hitter was the first by a XULA opponent. The program launched in 2021.
LCU lost 10-2 to third-seeded, 22nd-ranked Texas A&M-Texarkana.
The Wildcats were 3-1 against XULA during the regular season.
