XULA beats Dillard for 28th consecutive time

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana outhit city rival Dillard .287 to .061 Wednesday and rolled to a 25-18, 25-18, 25-19 women's volleyball victory at XULA's Convocation Center.
It was the 28th consecutive time that the Gold Nuggets beat Dillard; the streak started 14 years ago.
Kamea Uitenham had 10 kills, Sydney Murray and Taylor Parker had eight kills apiece, and Michaela Clayton had 13 digs for XULA (10-3), which won its third in a row overall.
Dillard led 6-2 in the first set, but XULA answered with a 14-4 run and never was seriously threatened thereafter.
"We stopped making mistakes and played cleaner," XULA head coach Pat Kendrick said of her team's response to the early deficit. "We hung in well during several long rallies. Some blocking schemes we tried recently started to work, and our serve-receive was pretty decent."
Kennedy Campbell had seven kills for XULA, and Laila Person and Kendall Evans had five apiece. Uitenham served two aces, Murray had 10 digs, Charity Metcalf had 20 assists, and Parker produced six blocks.
Neveah Bax had six kills, and Cadence Thomas served three aces for Dillard (3-3).
Attendance was 568, the most ever for volleyball in the Convocation Center, which played host to its first match in 2013.
XULA's next match will start at 6 p.m. Sept. 22 at Dillard. The Gold Nuggets' next home match will be Oct. 15 against another city rival, Loyola.
