NEW ORLEANS, La. - It might have been freezing outside the doors of the Convocation Center Thursday night, but inside the home-standing XULA men's basketball team was putting on an incredible offensive display en route to a 101-66 win over Southwest in RRAC play.
Xavier (13-6, 10-4) played a strong first half and led 46-36 at the break, but Southwest (5-15, 2-12) pulled to within 53-50 of the lead at the 13:10 mark of the second half.
However, the Gold Nuggets unleashed one of the more impressive runs one is likely to find at any level of college basketball - 34-6 over 7 minutes of game play - to blow open the game.
From there, it was academic as XULA wound down the clock while adding slightly to its lead.
The Gold Nugget defense, long the pride of the Xavier men's basketball team, was uncanny in its ability to create chaos for the visiting team. XULA defenders blocked 4 shots and forced 34 turnovers, which they converted into 53 points, just 13 fewer than Southwest's total.
Offensively, Xavier proved adept at scoring in numerous ways. Six players contributed 7 or more points.
Nasir DeGruy scored a game-high 24, while Leon Williams put up 22 points to go along with an incredible 8 steals, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Seviuhn Turner posted 16 points, Jamal Gibson 9, and D'Ron McZeal 7, while Wayne Randall-Bashay posted 8 points and a team-high 8 rebounds.
This is the second time in the past four games that Xavier has scored more than 100 points, and the third in three games that the Gold Nuggets have eclipsed the 90-point mark.
Next up for Xavier is a Saturday home contest against RRAC opponent North Texas-Dallas. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
