Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

XULA defeats Ave Maria at Eagle Classic

TEXARKANA, Texas - The Gold Nuggets took a comfortable lead in the first quarter that they never surrendered here Saturday evening, defeating Florida's Ave Maria 61-52 in the Eagle Classic hosted by Texas A&M Texarkana.

Xavier (2-0) continued its hot start by again holding an opponent to fewer than 60 points and getting timely scoring from key newcomers. XULA outscored Ave Maria (0-2) 22-16 in the first quarter and 10-7 in the second to take a 32-23 lead into the half.

It was a nine-point lead that the Gold Nuggets protected in the second half by matching Ave Maria's 29-point output over the third and fourth quarters.

Defense was again a strong point for Xavier, which forced 26 turnovers and blocked 5 shots. Three of those blocks came from an unlikely source - guard Jala Williams, who, at 5-foot-3, is, by 4 inches, the shortest of Coach Bo Browder's starting five. Williams added 4 points, 5 rebounds, and an assist.

Post player Faith Robinson, who burst onto the XULA scene Friday night with a double-double in a blowout win over TAMUT, made it 2-for-2 on the season with an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double Saturday.

Guard Jakayla Gilmer, another newcomer, followed her 12-point debut with a 15-point, 6-rebound showing. She was also tops on the team with 5 assists and 5 steals.

XULA has a huge game their next time out. XULA hosts NCAA Division I opponent LSU New Orleans on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. It will be Black Out Night at the Convocation Center, so dress for the occasion and come cheer on your Gold Nuggets.
