XULA rallies for huge win over Faulkner

NEW ORLEANS - A second-set rally proved the turning point here Tuesday afternoon, as Xavier Volleyball rebounded from an early setback by going on a run that took the Gold Nuggets to a 3-1 win over Faulkner in Southern States Athletic Conference play.

XULA (10-10, 6-6 SSAC) fell 25-22 in a closely contested first set and were tied with the Eagles (9-16, 4-9 SSAC) 7-7 in the second, but went on a 10-1 run, highlighted by a long series of serves by Beatrice Giusti, en route to a 25-16 win in set 2.

The Gold Nuggets battled for a 25-22 win in the third set, then won going away, 25-15, in the fourth.

Standout performances were easy to find among the Xavier players. Kamea Uitenham, who last week was within 3 kills of the program's all-time single-game record, had another monster performance, scoring 22 total points on 20 kills and 2 service aces.

Kennedy Campbell and Charlie Henderson added 12.5 points apiece, Campbell with 10 kills, a solo block, and 3 block assists, and Henderson with 11 kills and 3 block assists.

Michaela Clayton was against tops on the team in digs with 19, followed by Henderson with 17 and Uitenham with 11.

Freshman Kamrynn Williams was on fire as the Gold Nuggets' setter, racking up an impressive 31 assists on the night.

Defensively, Xavier did an admirable job in the second, third, and fourth sets, holding Faulkner to attacking percentages of .024 in set 2, .132 in set 3, and minus-.051 in set 3.

XULA will hit the road for its next match, but it will not have far to travel. The Gold Nuggets travel to in-city opponent Loyola-New Orleans on Friday at 6 p.m., before ending the regular season with a three-game homestand.
