Xavier routs Texas College in home opener

NEW ORLEANS - Fans of Xavier Men's Basketball could not have asked for much better in a home opener. Wednesday night, the Gold Rush cruised to a lopsided 90-50 win over former conference opponent Texas College.

XULA and Texas College had previously played twice annually as members of the Red River Athletic Conference, and the teams renewed their series as a single nonconference contest this season.

The Gold Rush stormed ahead early and enjoyed a 28-point lead, 51-23, at the half. In that run, XULA shot 47.5 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from 3-point range while holding the Steers to just 18.4 percent from the field and 14.3 percent from behind the 3-point line.

Elijah Wilson and Dez Perkins, who scored 10 points apiece in the first half, were key figures in establishing what turned out to be an insurmountable lead.

Also central to the Gold Rush's success were post player Jylan Howze, who had 9 points and 4 rebounds in the first half, and Kingston Jarrell, who came off the bench to score 8 points and pull down 9 rebounds.

Senior Leon Williams added 5 points and 10 rebounds in the first half.

When play resumed after the break, the numbers only grew more impressive. By the 11-minute mark of the second half, Xavier's lead had grown to 41, and the Gold Rush remained in full control for the remainder of the contest.

Four XULA players scored in double figures on the night.

Perkins put up a game-high 18 and completed the first double-double of his XULA career with 11 boards.

Wilson went for 16 points and 8 rebounds, while Jarrell had 14 points and 9 rebounds, and Howze had 13 points and 7 rebounds.

Williams scored 7 points, and his presence was felt throughout the game. He led all players with 13 rebounds and also accounted for 5 assists and 2 steals.

Collectively,  the Gold Rush shot 45.2 percent for the game while holding Texas College to 23.5 percent shooting and forcing the Steers into 16 turnovers.

Up next for the Xavier will be a Friday-night visit to crosstown rival Dillard for the first of two contests against the Bleu Devils. The game is set to tip off at 8 p.m., after the Xavier and Dillard women's teams complete their contest.
