Perkins' 31 lifts Xavier past Dillard on road

NEW ORLEANS - Senior transfer Dez Perkins dropped 31 points on the Bleu Devils as Xavier cruised to a 72-61 win over crosstown rival Dillard Friday night at Dent Hall.

Perkins, a native of Baton Rouge, a graduate of Madison Prep, and a transfer from NCAA Division II Clark Atlanta, showed why he is listed as a guard/forward, scoring his points on 9 field goals inside the 3-point line and 4 from beyond it (plus a made free throw).

Xavier (2-1)  led Dillard (0-2) 38-34 at the break thanks to an incredible first half from Perkins, who scored 17 points on four field goals and three 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes. Jylan Howze and Kingston Jarrell each scored 8 points, and Jarrell pulled down 6 rebounds in the first half.

Three Gold Rush players reached double-figure scoring on the night. Howze finished with 15 points and 9 rebounds, while point guard Elijah Pichon added 13 points, 6 boards, 4 assists, and 3 steals.

Jarrell finished with 8 points and 7 rebounds, while Leon Williams scored 5 points and pulled down six rebounds.

For the second consecutive game, XULA also proved adept at limiting the other team's scoring and held the Bleu Devils to 36 percent shooting from both the field and the 3-point line. Along the way, Xavier blocked 3 shots and forced 14 turnovers.

Friday night's win was the fourth straight for Xavier over Dillard, and the Gold Rush's eighth win in the last 10 meetings. XULA enjoys an all-time record of 54-29 against the Bleu Devils, including a 23-15 record as the visiting team.

The Gold Rush have a one-week break before returning to action for Homecoming 2026. XULA will host SUNO on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 5 p.m.
