NEW ORLEANS - Xavier Baseball had its most complete performance of the season Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader from Texas College to win the Gold Rush's home-opening RRAC series 2 games to 1.
Xaver (4-8, 2-4, RRAC) won the first game 2-1 and the second 6-4. In both contests, XULA pitchers kept the potent Texas College (2-6, 2-4 RRAC) at bay, while the Gold Rush sticks came through with timely scoring.
In Game 1, starter Chad McKenzie gave Xavier 4⅔ innings of solid work, striking out 7 and allowing no runs. His reliever, Colby Guillory, picked up the win.
Offensively, the first game belonged to centerfielder Cohen Boyd, who played in reserve and went 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run scored.
Boyd was even more impressive in Game 2; he went 2-for-5 with a 2-run homerun and a pair of runs scored. Catcher Lawrence Steed went 2-for-2.
Starting pitcher Christopher Nelson went 4⅔ innings and struck out 3. Reliever Francis Thorne picked up the win, going 2⅓ innings and striking out 3, while Charles Carter got the save after working 2 scoreless innings.
Next up for Xavier is a midweek visit to in-city opponent No. 7 Loyola.
