Big offense not enough as XULA falls to OLLU in Game 1

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Xavier Baseball had an offensive explosion Friday night, but a strong performance from Our Lady of the Lake spelled a 18-8 loss for the Gold Rush in the first game of a three-game Red River Athletic Conference series. 

On the positive side, XULA's bats looked as strong as they have all season, puting up an octet of runs on 9 hits, including two homeruns and a triple. 

First baseman Kai Higginson had a perfect day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a homerun, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI. 

Center fielder Cohen Boyd was other-worldly with a 2-for-3 performance that included a pair of runs scored, a triple, a homerun, and 2 RBI. 

Leadoff man and shortstop Lawrence Steed scored 3 runs to go along with a 1-for-2 showing at the plate, and catcher Kameron Briggs had one of his better offensive outings of the season with 2 hits and an RBI in 4 at-bats.

The teams wrap their series Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch of the early game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
