Softball shows fight, but falls in RRAC tourney

PINEVILLE, La. - The Gold Nuggets played with a quality and commitment worthy of the X that adorns the Xavier letter jacket Saturday, taking Louisiana Christian to the brink before ultimately falling 4-2 in an elimination game at the 2026 RRAC tournament.

Freshman pitcher Morgan Malveaux had another great outing, striking out 7 batters in a complete-game effort, and also going 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.

Left fielder Jada Jones and right fielder Arin Dale each went 2-for-4, with Jones adding a double. Third baseman Lexi McLin went 1-for-4 with a run scored, and Madelynn Hernandez provided the Gold Nuggets' other RBI.

In the early game, the Gold Nuggets fell 11-6 to Texas A&M-Texarkana, a contest that technically began on Thursday and was delayed by two days due to rain. The teams had played just a half inning on Thursday when play was halted, and they picked up where they left off Saturday at noon.

Xavier kept the game close until a rough bottom of the sixth inning, when TAMUT scored six runs. XULA scored a pair of runs in the seventh, but was unable to make up the ground before the last out was recorded.

Malveaux, the designated player in the first contest, had a wonderful game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, 3 RBI, and a run scored.

Center fielder Miya Covington went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a steal, while Dale went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Although the season is at an end, the Gold Nuggets have a great deal of which to be proud, both as a team and among individuals.

Malveeaux, whose record as a starter was 9-7, became the first pitcher in four years to finish with a winning record. Carina Chargois, who went 14-10 in 2022, was the most recent player to accomplish the feat.

XULA also had three players - McLin, Jones, and Covington - finish with batting averages of .300 or better and had a first-team all-conference performer (McLin) for the first time in three years.
