Gold Nuggets fall in exhibition action at SELA

HAMMOND, La. - The Xavier volleyball team gave itself quite the test in a preseason tune-up, but the Gold Nuggets showed great fight and flashes of greatness in an exhibition loss to Southeastern Louisiana Thursday night.

XULA fell in straight sets to the NCAA Division I Lions, who play in the Southland Conference, but several student-athletes registered strong performances, especially in a tightly contested second set.

Junior outside hitter Kennedy Campbell had seven kills to lead the team, with freshman Charlie Henderson adding 5. 

It was a great night for XULA newcomers, as freshman setter Kamrynn Williams led the team with 11 assists and 3 digs and freshman middle blocker Mikayla Matthews assisted on a pair of blocks. Sophomore transfer Sara Marzinot added 6 assists. 

Junior outside hitter Kamea Uitenham proved the most adept at fending off SELA serves, finishing with 13 receptions to go along with 4 kills. 

The Gold Nuggets' regular season begins Aug. 28 in Nebraska with a visit to the Bellevue Bruin Classic. XULA's home opener will be Sept. 4 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Big East Blastoff.
